Why the charter matters
Most residents never read it, but the City Charter sets the rules for everything City Hall does.
How we're taxed, how the budget is built, and how much power residents have over decisions that affect their block.
Every few decades, voters get the rare chance to update it. This is that chance.
On November 3, Dearborn Heights voters will decide whether the city's charter undergoes a general revision — and, if it passes, choose the nine-member Charter Commission that would lead it. Sam Sakka is one of the candidates seeking a seat.
Where Sam stands
A closer look at how residents are represented in city government.
Priority 01Modernize a charter with no tools to attract investment or grow local business.
Priority 02Update decades-old tax rules so the city can fund services without leaning on residents.
Priority 03No school authority here, but stronger support for libraries and youth programs.
Priority 04Bring planning and infrastructure rules up to date for the neighborhoods we have.
